Matthijs de Ligt unperturbed by the ongoing speculation with Barcelona
Netherlands international Matthijs de Ligt has said that he is unperturbed by the ongoing speculation linking him with Barcelona. The Catalan giants recently completed the signing of Frenkie de Jong from Ajax on a pre-contract agreement for the summer and reports have since suggested that De Ligt could pursue the same destination.
He said: “I can’t stop journalists talking about that, it’s part of football. Now that Frenkie has completed his transfer, it [the speculation] can happen to me, but the only thing that interests me is Ajax. That’s the only thing I’m working on. I’m just going to do my own thing and everything will work out if I do that. I think anyone would like to play for Barcelona at some point in their career. We’ll see where I end up but for now I’m very happy at Ajax and I hope to have a good season here. Or seasons, maybe.”
De Ligt became a regular with the Dutch giants during the 2016/17 season and he has since not looked back with a consistent role at the heart of the defence. Moreover, he has also made the mark with the Dutch national team where he has been trusted with a central defensive role alongside Virgil van Dijk and it may not be long before he makes the switch to a European elite. De Ligt has amassed nearly 100 appearances for the Capital outfit. He has 13 caps with the Netherlands national team.
